Born, raised and residing in Sacramento, California, I consider myself an apparel enthusiast. I’ve been sewing since I was seventeen and in high school I started making my own clothes and costumes and I was heavily involved with the visual and performing arts. With theatre, I participated in my high school productions as an actress as well as a costumer– creating and sewing costumes specifically for my school’s first big musical production, The Wizard of Oz, in the newly built performance arts auditorium. I also excelled in Studio Art and was in advanced placement courses on top of being part of the school’s honor society (to which I received a scholarship from when I graduated in 2010), earned various awards on my achievements in art and cheer leading and participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities.
The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, California was my post-high school plan, but because of the lack of funds and financial help I became a Hornet at California State University, Sacramento as a Fashion Merchandising and Design major with a Theatre minor. What seemed like bad luck became a blessing in disguise– while a student at Sac State I’ve became active in both my fields of study and was part of the on-campus organization, the Student Fashion Association where I served at one point as a Blogger and Historian and assisted with coordinating and styling their fashion shows. I also helped out with the costuming in the Theatre and Dance department at Sac State– I still dabbled with acting, but my main focus with my Theatre minor was costume design. Although I am passionate about fashion and theatrical costuming, in college I still dabbled with studio art and participated in the Sacramento News and Review Newsstand Art Project. I will be graduating with my Bachelor’s of Arts in Fall 2014.
Along with school and my part time jobs, I held many internships at many different local businesses and events including: Article Consignment Boutique, Mademoiselle (under the guidance of stylist Simone Vianna), Hair & Fashion Battle (in which Project Runway Season 11’s Richard Hallmarq showcased a collection), A Berry Special Event, Launch Events (in which Project Runway’s contestant Seth Aaron (winner of season 7), Michael Costello, Gordana Gelhausen and Joseph Aaron Segal showcased during the Launch x Fashion events) and Sacramento Fashion Week. Most of my internships have required me to write for blogs and outside of internships I have also blogged for LocalAccess.TV and for another local fashion blog named Artsy Apparel. I also began styling for Legacy Boutique and my own photo shoots– specifically for the internationally known Ladies of Steampunk magazine to which I also designed and sewed my own dress for the first time I was featured. Besides my own shoots, I began modeling for designers Dolldelight, Carlyfornia and Juicy Sweets. On top of all this, I continued to indulge in the hobby of cosplay and created, sewed and modeled my own costumes and have been featured in 1,000 Incredible Cosplay and Costume Ideas by well-known cosplay ambassador Yaya Han and Dr. Grymm Laboratories.
My adventure in apparel is documented here at sacstylebygina— from my past experiences as a blogger and public relations intern I have decided to launch and run my own blog. By doing this I have the freedom to blog about whatever I want as well as promote the local small Sacramento businesses– after working so closely with the local small businesses of my city I have experienced what a friendly, passionate and tight-knit community they are and I believe that they deserve the same attention and respect as large corporate companies. I have gained recognition as a blogger– specifically as one of the Best Sacramento Fashion Blogs according to CBS Sacramento and am proud of my perspective on fashion and Sacramento. However, my dream is to be a fashion designer and I am currently working on my own brand, Pixiegift Fashions.
